Congress Report
Senate Holds Hearings on Media Ownership

On Thursday, June 19, the Senate committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation will hold hearings on proposed bill S. 1046, "Preservation of Localism, Program Diversity, and Competition in Television Broadcast Service Act of 2003."

This bill would prohibit further granting of licenses to open new media stations to media companies that own stations "which have an aggregate national audience reach exceeding 35 percent."

Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK) introduced the bill. The bill has 30 co-sponsors. This bill comes on the heels of a recent Federal Communications Commission ruling which would have allowed media companies to own more TV stations which in total would reach up to 45 percent of the national audience.
